I'm a Sassy Disney Lady!

Anonymous asked: "Where's all the "PoC" in your favorite disney movie, Beauty and the Beast? Hypocrite."

Yeha, it’s a problem in that movie too. Am I supposed to mention every problem in every movie every time I utter a sentence about lack of PoC? Cmon. Also the WHOLE POINT OF MY VIDEO was that it’s ok to criticize the things you love so stop pointing out that as “my fave movie” (it’s not btw) because it doesn’t mean I excuse it’s problems.

It was such a big mistake to mention Frozon in my video. If Disney fans excuse Disney not doing the best they can, Frozen fans do it the most.

Anonymous asked: "uhhhh most people of the Sami culture aren't PoC... they are mostly white"

"Sami people and other PoC" is what I said. They included neither. Unless you count the rando PoC’s in the back of the ball scene, which I do not count.

Anonymous asked: "Hey so I'm just saying, but just because some Disney movies aren't as diverse as one might want, doesn't mean they're racist. That's kind of like saying someone hates mustard because they only put ketchup on their burger."

Disney, as a whole, not featuring different races/ethnicities/cultures in their movies is racist, as a whole.

Certain movies not being diverse is also racist. Which movie are you talking about? Frozen? Because the choice to not include Sami people or other PoC in Frozen was…exclusionary and definitely not not-racist…There was the option to include PoC and some group of people was like “naw only white people” or, more likely, didn’t even realize they were excluding PoC because institutionalized racism is so strong and we don’t even feel it anymore.

Hey Tumblr Disney community! You’re really guilty of excusing Disney for the bad shit they’ve done. Here’s a video of me telling you to quit doing that.

Hmm. I watched this thinking it could have something interesting. It did not.

A summary of the video: There is so much wrong with Disney. There is so much wrong with Disney. There is SO MUCH wrong with Disney. Like, racism. So much gender roles. So much racism. I mean, Frozen has no poc characters! Yeah. So much. I won’t tell you what, but there’s so much. Don’t be afraid of criticizing Disney.

I mean, I don’t see the point of this. It was basically just “Disney does bad shit it’s ok to criticize it” ad infinitum. It’d be better if there was some actual content explaining why it was problematic, but otherwise there’s no reason to watch the video.

(And why in the world would you need to call it problematic for a movie with a relatively small amount of notable human characters, almost all of which are royalty from Northern Europe, to not have poc characters? That’s like pissing over how Mulan didn’t have enough white people or how Pocahontas didn’t have any Asian people.)

I left out a clip where I said “I could list all of the ways Disney has been racist or sexist, but there are too many to put in one video”, because it’s true. There are too many for one video and I like to keep mine under 4 minutes long, MAX.

I’ve been addressing the PoC in Norway thing a lot today (btw it’s a fictional city called Arendelle, not Norway, so) if you want to read. Also there are a lot of PoC people native to Norway, so there’s that.

Also, the main point was to address that people don’t think you can criticize something and still love it. They don’t think you can do both. And you can.

Anonymous asked: "Just watched your new video, and I loved it. I completely agree with everything you said. But I'm kind of confused/uneducated with everything that's going on with the frozen controversy. I'm also uneducated about the time period/country it's supposed to be set it, would there have been a lot of diversity? Is the movie even inspired be a real place/time period? Do tell!"

This has been popping up a lot on my video, as I knew it would when I decided to even mention Frozen.

Everyone’s like “omg it’s in Norway so why wouldn’t everyone be white! everyone is white there!” <— untrue. There are and have always been PoC in Norway.

Aside from that, Arendelle (which is a fictional place) is only “based” on Norway. We are also introduced to magic trolls, a queen with ice powers, and a giant, murderous snowman in this movie. We can make our minds believe all of those things, but not PoC in Norway? That’s ridiculous to me.

setsailforthesky asked: "so recently saw your vid on problems with Disney. as a Disney blog myself, I do agree, everything should be looked at critically and questioned. however, saying that the entire tumblr Disney community ignores the problems is a poor generalization on your part. we don't all ignore the problems. many of the Disney blogs I follow/am friendly with discuss these problems every day. and if we choose to more often celebrate the good parts of Disney then zero in on the bad, that does not make us stupid."

That’s really great and I’m glad you and your Tumblr buds are thinking critically about Disney. I contemplating changing my caption under that video, but honestly a lot of the Disney community on here DOES excuse the mistakes Disney has made / still makes and blindly defends it. I stand by that. It’s overwhelmingly the case. There are obviously exceptions (as with you and me), but still.

I never said you were stupid for celebrating the good parts. In fact, in the video, I talk consistently about how you’re allowed and SHOULD love what you love about Disney. I certainly do! I hope that comes across.

Anonymous asked: "hi Sarah, so i know that in relationships when a partner tries to control who the other one talks to/associates with its a sign that its an abusive relationship, this girl that I'm seeing has been talking to my friends trying to find out if there are any other girls or about previous girls, and telling them that she loves me which is embarrassing and idk what else, but i want to ask her to stop bc i don't like her talking to my friends, would that make me abusive and controlling?"

The fact that you’re concerned about being manipulative is very encouraging because I feel like you’re less likely to be that way if you’re conscious of it.

I don’t think you are being abusive. There’s a difference between “Do not talk to my friends” and “Please don’t ask my friends about my past relationships, I’d be more than happy to talk to you about that myself”.

I obviously don’t know the whole story here. I’m just assuming you haven’t given her a reason to be worried. But it doesn’t sound bad from what you’ve said.

Anonymous asked: "Sarah! You're going to the 24 Hour Event, right? tbh I'm kind of scared, you'd think Disney for 24 hours YAY, but I don't really know what to expect. Do you have any tips to survive the long hours?! :)"

I actually made a video about this for One More Disney Day a couple years ago - http://youtu.be/zxND8iMR6Qo

The only things I would add is that if you are staying for the full 24 hours, be sure you have someone to drive you home the next day. It was really scary to drive home on little-to-no-sleep. Very unsafe.

Bring sweatshirts because it gets pretty cold at night.

The chargers are really a must.

I ended up sleeping just at tables during OMDD. I just sat in a chair, put my head down, and would sleep for like an hour. Worked out ok.
